Whenever we hear about a student committing suicide in India, we assume it to be a failure in some exam. However, But, the suicide of 17-year-old Kriti besides scoring more than what is required to get her a seat in an IIT Institution says a different story.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in 2014 alone, 8,032 student suicides were reported, out of which, in only 30% of these cases, failure in exams was the cause. In the majority of cases, other reasons activate student suicides. Let us know about some of them.

1. Forced Career Choices- In India, commonly many students suffer from the sufferings quality of pressure When it comes to career choices, family, as well as teachers, start expecting and giving advice. In Kriti’s case, it was her being forced to take up science by her mother. She stated the same in a suicide letter.

2. Poor Education System- Again, this is one of the biggest reasons as students get pressure to conserve seats in top-notch institutions and the ever-high cut-offs. However, it leads many students to give up and forces them to try something as serious as suicide.

3. Not Speaking Up- One of the important reasons is not speaking up. In a major portion of Student Suicide cases, the causes are unknown. This is assumed that the victim was not satisfied addressing their concerns even for one last time.

It has been found after a study that victims find it hard to willingly express their concerns about the pressure they are dealing with, even with their parents. Last year, a student Anjali Anand committed suicide, just because she predicted not to perform well in an exam she was preparing for. In her suicide note, Anjali tells her parents, “I cannot face you if I am not selected.”

What Should be Done?

Well, to deal with such a situation, the parents and teachers must commence making an effort to understand the caliber and the skills of their children. Simply pressurize them and criticizing them for their poor performance in academics is going to add to their suffering. This will make them suffer in silence and force them to feel lonely. Loneliness and stress combined can slowly lead them to depression.

However, for students it is very crucial to understand that suicide is not a solution. It only devastates not only their own but many other lives.
