Juan Vicente Pérez, aged112, has been certified as the world’s oldest living person

Juan Vicente Pérez of Venezuela has been officially confirmed as the oldest living human (male) aged 112 years and 253 days.

He is 112 years, 11 months, and 21 days old today, and his 113th birthday is just around the corner.

Juan was born on May 27, 1909, in El Cobre, Táchira, Venezuela, to Eutiquio del Rosario Pérez Mora and Edelmira Mora. He was the ninth of ten children.

His family relocated to Los Pajuiles, a town near San José de Bolivar, in 1914. He began working in agriculture alongside his father and brothers at the age of five, assisting with sugar cane and coffee harvesting.

Juan and his brother, Miguel, built a trapiche (wooden mill) to help in the production of coffee and sugar cane, and later, he was able to buy a larger machine to boost the farm’s productivity.

He began attending the local school when he was ten years old, but only for five months since his teacher became ill. Juan, fortunately, learned the fundamentals of reading and writing from a book given to him by his teacher.

While still working in agriculture, he moved on to become a sheriff in Caricuena in 1948, where he was in charge of resolving land and family conflicts for ten years.

Apart from agriculture, one of Juan’s greatest passions is to improve his relationship with God and his family. He is grateful for his life, as well as the food and people in his environment.

Juan Vicente married Ediofina del Rosario Garca and they had a 60-year relationship till she died in 1997. The couple had eleven children – six sons and five girls – and their family has grown to include 41 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren over the years.

Juan Vicente would spend his free time with his family after a long day at work. On the Vitrola, his son Edesio would perform Antonio Aguilar, Hermanas Calles, and Negro Picante melodies.

Juan Vicente witnessed many remarkable inventions over his life, including television and the internet. He had his ID photo shot in black and white for the first time when he was 51 years old.

Juan Vicente is in excellent health and has excellent memory. He recalls his childhood, marriage, siblings’ names, children, and grandchildren. He enjoys being surrounded by family and friends who tell him stories and engage in lively discussion.
