India to surpass China as most-populous country in 2023

India is anticipated to overtake China to become the world’s most populous country in 2023, four years earlier than the United Nations had previously predicted.

The UN projects that the world’s population will reach 8 billion on November 15 and reach 8.5 billion by 2030. According to a study titled World Population Prospects 2022, just eight nations—Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Tanzania—are predicted to experience more than half of the increase between now and 2050.

According to the report, China’s population will begin to decline completely as early as next year. According to government data, China’s population of 1.41 billion increased at the slowest rate since the 1950s, prompting a Chinese official to predict that the nation’s population may peak as early as 2022. India was predicted to surpass China by 2027 in a previous report.

Lower mortality rates and demographic changes may ensure that central and southern Asia become the most populous region on the planet by 2037. Sub-Saharan Africa’s population could nearly double to 2 billion by the late 2040s. According to data, population growth rates in Europe and Northern America were nearly zero in 2020 and 2021.

The global population is expected to reach 9.7 billion in 2050 and 10.4 billion in 2100, both of which are lower than the UN’s 2019 estimate of 11 billion. According to the report, which cites data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, India’s total fertility rate may fall to 1.29 births per woman by 2100, down from the UN’s earlier estimate of 1.69 births.

According to the report, women and men are expected to be equal in number by 2050, with the current global count of 49.7 percent women compared to 50.3 percent men inverted. It stated that sustained high fertility and rapid population growth pose challenges to achieving sustainable development.
