Italy’s PM Draghi resigns from his position
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi handed over his resignation after coalition partner Five Star withdrew its support in a confidence vote. Draghi has led a coalition government since February 2021.
Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella, however, did not accept his resignation. The national unity government has been in power for less than 18 months. Matrarella asked the former head of the European Central Bank to get a clearer picture of the political situation.
The 5-Star Movement, a coalition party, did not back him in a confidence vote over his plan to combat soaring prices, Reuters reported. It isn’t clear yet if Mattarella managed to change Draghi’s mind. Draghi is expected to go back to the parliament on Wednesday. With sufficient backing, he could remain in power.
There have been divisions among Italy’s political parties on how to respond to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and issues like rising costs of living. Draghi has won praise for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
