Microsoft will discontinue support for Windows 8.1 in January 2023

Windows 8.1 was one of the popular editions of the famous operating system, owing to its great blend of the older, distinctive Windows interface and the tiled UI Microsoft was aiming for at the time. After the debacle that was Windows 8, Windows 8.1 promised a steady experience.

The end of Windows 8.1 is, however, drawing closer as Windows 10 and Windows 11 have become far more reliable, popular, and feature-rich. Microsoft has stated that technical support for Windows 8.1 will cease in January 2023, almost 7 months from now. Support for Windows 8 was similarly discontinued in January 2016.

After January 10, 2023, users of Windows 8.1 will no longer receive security updates, requiring them to switch to later Windows versions in order to continue using the operating system securely.

Microsoft has issued a list of frequently asked questions regarding the transition on its website, including what happens if you continue to use Windows 8.1 after January 2023.

It should be noted that Windows 8.1 will continue to function after January 2023. However, if no security updates are installed, your Windows 8.1 desktop or laptop may be open to a variety of dangers and assaults via the web or local wired and wireless networks.

Applications such as Microsoft 365 will no longer support Windows 8.1 PCs after January 10, as they adhere to Microsoft’s Modern Lifecycle Policy, which encourages customers to stay up to speed with the most secure software.
