The Datia Assembly bypoll has delivered an important political message in Madhya Pradesh. Although the result does not change the balance of power in the state Assembly, it has become a talking point because of the circumstances surrounding the election.
The Congress managed to regain the seat after running a well-organised campaign, while the BJP faced criticism over internal disagreements and its decision to replace senior leader Dr Narottam Mishra with a new candidate.
BJP’s Candidate Decision Became the Turning Point
Much of the political discussion during the bypoll centred on the BJP’s decision to deny a ticket to former Home Minister Dr Narottam Mishra, a leader who had represented Datia multiple times.
Instead, the party nominated Ashutosh Tiwari, a move that reportedly surprised many local workers. Before the announcement, Narottam Mishra had already begun meeting supporters and preparing for the election after former Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti lost his Assembly membership.
The last-minute change in the candidate created dissatisfaction among a section of BJP workers, and political observers believe it affected the party’s campaign at the grassroots level.
Star Campaigners Could Not Reverse the Situation
The BJP left no stone unturned during the campaign. Several senior leaders visited Datia to seek support for the party candidate.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Jyotiraditya Scindia, Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda, state BJP president Hemant Khandelwal, and several cabinet ministers addressed election rallies.
Dr Narottam Mishra also campaigned alongside Ashutosh Tiwari in an effort to send a message of unity. However, reports suggested that many local workers remained unhappy, which affected voter mobilisation on polling day.
Congress Built Its Campaign Around Local Leadership
Unlike the BJP, the Congress concentrated on local political equations instead of relying only on high-profile leaders.
The party entrusted the election campaign to former minister Priyavrat Singh and OBC Congress state president Siddharth Kushwaha. Former minister Jaivardhan Singh also assessed the political situation before the party finalised its candidate.
After Rajendra Bharti declined to contest because of health reasons, the Congress selected Ghanshyam Singh as its candidate. Party leaders worked to resolve internal differences quickly, allowing the campaign to move forward without major disruptions.
Organisational Reforms Boost Congress
Congress leaders believe the Datia victory reflects the organisational changes introduced in the state over the past year.
The party has focused on strengthening district units, promoting younger leadership and improving coordination with grassroots workers. Senior leaders, including Digvijaya Singh, Ajay Singh, Sachin Yadav, Kamleshwar Patel, PC Sharma and several others, remained active throughout the campaign and maintained regular contact with local workers.
Party leaders say this coordinated approach helped create confidence among workers and strengthened the campaign at the booth level.
Datia Result Sends a Strong Political Message
The bypoll result is likely to influence the political strategies of both major parties in Madhya Pradesh.
For the BJP, the defeat has sparked debate over candidate selection and organisational unity. The party is expected to review reports of internal dissatisfaction before upcoming elections.
For the Congress, the victory has provided fresh momentum after a series of electoral setbacks. Leaders believe the result will energise party workers ahead of the urban local body elections and the 2028 Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections.
While Datia represents only one Assembly seat, the bypoll has demonstrated that local leadership, organisational discipline and worker support can significantly influence election outcomes.
