Esports: Sony to increase its investment in esports
Sony acquired a stake in Evo last year, and it is now purchasing Repeat.gg.
Sony is acquiring the esports tournament platform Repeat.gg, marking the company’s latest esports investment. According to GamesIndustry.biz, Repeat.gg has hosted over 100,000 tournaments with over 2.3 million participants, covering popular games like as Fortnite, League of Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone.
“With the excellent Repeat.gg team, we’re thrilled to explore other means for fans to engage in competitive gaming and increase the spectrum of our esports offerings,” Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Steven Roberts told GamesIndustry.biz. “This is only the start of our trip, and we hope to provide more updates to our community in the future.”
Repeat.gg will have access to “additional resources, game titles, and technology” as a result of the acquisition, according to the team’s blog post regarding the acquisition. Furthermore, the platform would continue to support PC, mobile, and other consoles “in addition to PlayStation.”
The Repeat.gg deal comes on the heels of Sony’s acquisition of the famed esports event Evo in collaboration with RTS last year. (The first live Evo since 2019 will take held in August.) The firm also organises its own tournaments via the PlayStation Tournaments platform, and as Sony moves into live service games in a significant manner, it appears that the corporation is searching for new methods to bring gamers together for contests.
Monday’s acquisition is also the most recent in a line of recent transactions. Sony completed its purchases of Destiny developer Bungie and Jade Raymond’s Haven Studios this week, and also announced a huge cooperation with Discord in May 2021.
