Delhi: India’s first airport to run on green energy

The Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation programme has also given Delhi the top ranking in the Asia-Pacific area at “Level 4+.”

The Indira Gandhi International (IG) airport in Delhi becomes the first in the country to function totally on a combination of hydro and solar electricity, marking another milestone toward the use of green energy. This action will contribute to a yearly reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 20,000 tonnes. Additionally, Delhi has earned the top spot in the Asia-Pacific area for “Level 4+” under the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

The hydropower generating company in Himachal Pradesh and Delhi International Airport Ltd. have signed a long-term deal known as a power purchase agreement (PPA). The agreement for the airport’s hydroelectricity supply was made through the year 2036. By 2030, the airport wants to have zero carbon emissions.
