The UP Assembly Monsoon Session ended on Wednesday, one day earlier than scheduled. Continuous protests by Samajwadi Party (SP) MLAs disrupted the proceedings and forced an early conclusion. Speaker Satish Mahana announced the indefinite adjournment of the House after repeated disruptions.
The session was originally scheduled to continue until Thursday, August 6. However, the Assembly could not function normally for two consecutive days because of the opposition’s protests.
Speaker Satish Mahana Adjourns the House
The Assembly witnessed loud protests from Samajwadi Party legislators. They raised slogans over the alleged theft of donations at the Ram Temple and demanded justice for suspended SP MLA Sachin Yadav.
As the protests continued, Speaker Satish Mahana adjourned the House indefinitely. He appeared emotional while addressing the Assembly and expressed disappointment over the conduct of members. He also questioned whether he was still the right person to continue as Speaker.
Speaker Expresses Disappointment
Mahana criticized several legislators for uploading photographs and videos from inside the Assembly on social media. He said he had clearly instructed members not to record or share such content. Calling the incident unfortunate, he said he would seriously reflect on his role and decide whether he should continue in the position.
CM Yogi Adityanath Blames the Samajwadi Party
After the Assembly proceedings ended, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath strongly criticized the Samajwadi Party. He accused the opposition of preventing meaningful discussions inside the House.
According to the Chief Minister, the government introduced a supplementary budget worth more than ₹59,000 crore. The budget aimed to support welfare schemes and development projects across Uttar Pradesh. He said the opposition’s protests stopped the House from discussing these proposals.
Welfare Schemes Could Not Be Discussed
Yogi Adityanath said the supplementary budget included financial support for Anganwadi workers, government cooks, village chowkidars, and pension beneficiaries. The government also planned to strengthen schemes for women, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.
He said these welfare measures deserved a proper discussion. However, the opposition’s repeated disruptions prevented the debate from taking place.
Supplementary Budget Still Passed
Despite the protests, the Assembly passed the supplementary budget. The Chief Minister said the government would soon begin implementing the proposed welfare programmes.
Why the Samajwadi Party Was Protesting
The controversy began on Tuesday. Samajwadi Party legislators demanded a discussion on the alleged theft of donations at the Ram Temple.
Sachin Yadav’s Suspension
During the protest, SP MLA Sachin Yadav displayed a poster inside the Assembly. Speaker Satish Mahana repeatedly asked him to remove it. When he refused, the Speaker suspended him for the rest of the session.
The Speaker then instructed Assembly marshals to escort the MLA out of the House. The situation quickly turned tense. Marshals and opposition legislators were involved in pushing and jostling during the confrontation.
Wednesday’s Protest Forced an Early End
The protests continued on Wednesday with even greater intensity. Samajwadi Party MLAs entered the Assembly carrying more posters. They raised slogans both inside and outside the House.
The Speaker briefly adjourned the House twice in an attempt to restore order. The protests continued despite those efforts. Finally, Satish Mahana adjourned the Assembly indefinitely, bringing the Monsoon Session to an end one day ahead of schedule.
Political Tensions Likely to Continue
The early conclusion of the Assembly session has further intensified the political battle between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party.
The BJP has accused the opposition of blocking discussions on development and welfare programmes. On the other hand, the Samajwadi Party maintains that it was raising issues of public importance. The confrontation is expected to remain a major political issue in Uttar Pradesh in the coming days.
