Supreme Court suggests setting up expert body to resolve freebies issue

The Supreme Court made a strong observation on Thursday about the culture of political parties announcing “freebies” during election season to entice voters, saying that it is causing a “significant loss to the country’s economy.”

The Supreme Court stated that political parties’ announcement and distribution of freebies is a “serious issue” that must be addressed. While urging a balance between people’s welfare schemes and freebies, the Supreme Court emphasised that the entire amount should be spent on infrastructure development.

The Supreme Court made these observations while hearing a petition filed by lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay seeking a ban on political parties promising “freebies” to entice voters ahead of elections. The petition requested that steps be taken to regulate election manifestos and hold political parties accountable for promises made in them.

“Nobody claims it isn’t a problem. It is a serious problem. Those who are receiving it desire it, and ours is a welfare state. Some may argue that they are paying taxes, which must be used for development. As a result, it’s a serious problem. As a result, both sides must be heard by the committee “NV Ramana, Chief Justice of India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has previously stated that “selfish announcements of freebies” will prevent the country from becoming self-sufficient, will increase the burden on honest taxpayers, and will discourage investment in new technologies.

On World Biofuel Day, the Prime Minister made these remarks via video conferencing at the Panipat second generation (2G) ethanol plant. He stated that the facility will be able to dispose of the stubble without having to burn it.

“Selfish freebie announcements will prevent the country from becoming self-sufficient, increase the burden on honest taxpayers, and prevent investment in new technologies,” he added. The Prime Minister also stated that over the next few years, more than 75% of the country’s households will have access to piped gas.

The Prime Minister stated that if there is selfishness in politics, anyone can come out and announce free gasoline and diesel. Such actions will deprive children of their rights and prevent the country from becoming self-sufficient.

The burden on the country’s honest taxpayers will rise as a result of such selfish policies, according to the Prime Minister. To address the country’s challenges, clear intentions, extreme hard work, policy, and massive investments are required.
