Khaby Lame becomes the most-followed person on TikTok

Guess who just dethroned Charli D’Amelio as the most-followed TikTok content creator? None other than Khaby Lame, a Senegalese online celebrity.
The 22-year-old comic from Italy rose to internet fame with his silent performances that lampoon overly intricate ‘life hacks.’ Khaby Lame surpassed Charli D’Amelio to become TikTok’s most popular creator on Wednesday night.
According to many news sources, he now has 142.8 million followers surpassing D’Amelio’s 142.3 million on the short-form video sharing app.
Khabane Lame, the influencer’s true name, joined TikTok during the start of the coronavirus outbreak. After losing his job in March 2020, Lame returned to Italy to live with his parents and began making silent movies in which he reacts to ludicrous ‘life hacks.’
Lame’s first viral video was uploaded in November 2020. After then, there was no turning back for the 22-year-old, whose videos now get millions of views each. Lame’s winning strategy consisted of wordless gestures and his signature wide-eyed look.
Aside from TikTok, he has a sizable Instagram following of 78.3 million.
Last week, the comedian told Hype Beast about his passion for content production and how he discovered his niche on TikTok. “I made videos on YouTube as a child, but only my father and uncle watched them,” Khaby Lame said. “It was with TikTok that I realized that I had found the ideal platform for me to upload my self-deprecating and comic videos. I like to entertain people with my irony, but it’s just a tool to do what I’m really interested in – encouraging those who follow me to fight to achieve their goals.”
