FIRST INDIAN WOMEN CLINCHED……………….IMF CHIEF ECONOMIST OFFICE

New Delhi: Indian women have left no stones unturned as Gita Gopinath, economic adviser to Kerala Government has become second Indian born IMF Chief Economist, on October 1st.

Earlier Raghuram Rajan was first India’s chief economist at IMF (Indian Monetary Fund), who also served as former RBI governor of India. The news was announced through the tweet.

“IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde appoints Harvard’s Gita Gopinath as IMF Chief Economist, replacing Maury Obstfeld who will retire from IMF in December.” –IMF

However, Gita is the first Indian woman who will present services in IMF, and her appointment is important in all aspects as the fund seeks to evolve its researches, thinking and practices to provide the positive result on the ground, importantly the two-way learning relationship between macroeconomic and financial issues.

Gita earlier in 2011, was a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader and her name was also marked in top 45 lists of economists in IMF.

What IMF does?

It was created in 1945; International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an organization of 189 world countries which has taken up the task on:

  • Foster global monetary cooperation in a world
  • Secure financial stability in the world’s perspective
  • Facilitate international trade relations between trading countries
  • Promote consistency in high employment and sustainable economic growth
  • Reduce poverty around the world and determines regular fund to countries.

ABOUT

Interestingly, she has graduated from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University and now is the Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University. She did her MA degree from both the Delhi school of economics and the University of Washington. After completed her studies, she joined the University of Chicago as an Assistant professor and work there till 2010 as a tenured professor. During her teaching carrier, she has also worked on International Finance and Macroeconomics research subject.
