World Wrestling Championship 2022: Bajrang Punia Bagged Bronze Medal

Ace grappler Bajrang Punia created history at the World Wrestling Championship 2022. The 28-year-old wrestler claimed a bronze medal by defeating Puerto Rico’s Sebastian C Rivera on the final day of the World Wrestling Championships 2022 in Belgrade on September 18.

Punia opened the bout on Saturday with a nasty cut on his head. He fought and won the entire tournament, overcoming his bleeding head.

The loss of blood surely took a toll on Bajrang’s game in the tournament. The ace grappler looked down and out in the beginning and lost the quarterfinal bout to USA’s Yianni Diakomihalis. John Michael Diakomihalis, who’s been a cadet twice and a NCC champion thrice, dismantled Bajrang Punia in the bout.

The bleeding warrior didn’t give up and marked his comeback win over Vazgen Tevanyan of Armenia by 7-6 points. Bajrang Punia has created history by becoming the first Indian to claim four medals at the World Wrestling Championships 2022.

The Indian freestyle wrestler, Bajrang Punia, was born on 26th February 1994. The wrestler originally hails from Jhajjar, Haryana. The wrestler belongs to a middle-class family in Haryana.

The father of the ace wrestler, Balwan Singh Punia, was a wrestler himself. Punia started with his wrestling training at a local akhada at the young age of 14 years. In the first few years of his training, Punia was introduced to the Olympic medallist, Yogeshwar Dutt, who became Punia’s mentor.

Union Sports Minister, Anurag Thakur congratulated the ace wrestler for clinching a bronze medal in the World Wrestling Championships 2022 organised in Belgrade, Serbia.

The Union Sports Minister took to his official Twitter account and posted, “Bajrang Punia shows his sporting class again!! He has bagged his 4th medal at the Senior World Wrestling Championships with a bronze in the 2022, Belgrade edition. Congratulations Champ!!

The wrestler, who recently won a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games, became the first Indian medallist to claim four medals in the World Wrestling Championships 2022.

Punia’s journey of medals kick started back in 2013 with a bronze medal. He then went on to win a silver medal in the 2018 championship league, followed by another bronze medal in 2019.

The reigning king of Wrestling, Bajrang Punia, is definitely an unstoppable force behind India’s wrestling contingent.
