Singapore Open: Sindhu & Prannoy advances to quarterfinals

The 29-year-old Indian, who is attempting to end his five-year title reign, will next fight Japan’s Kodai Naraoka.

PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, and in-form HS Prannoy advanced to the quarterfinals of the Singapore Open Super 500 badminton competition on Thursday. In the women’s singles competition, third seed Sindhu defeated Vietnam’s world number 59 Thuy Linh Nguyen 19-21 21-19 21-18 to set up a match with China’s Han Yue.

Saina Nehwal of India had a successful start to her Singapore Open 2022 campaign earlier on Wednesday.

In a 34-minute encounter on Court 4, Nehwal overcame her compatriot Malvika Bansod 21-18, 21-15.

In an hour and nine minutes, Prannoy, rated world number 19, won his second match in three weeks, defeating world number four & third seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei 14-21 22-20 21-18. The 29-year-old Indian, who is attempting to end his five-year title reign, will next fight Japan’s Kodai Naraoka.

Mithun Manjunath’s run came to an end a day after he defeated compatriot Kidambi Srikanth in straight sets, with a tenacious 10-21 21-18 16-21 loss against Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen. Ashmita Chaliha, who had previously defeated Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan, was also unable to advance in the event, falling 9-21 13-21 against Han Yue of China.

Later in the day, Saina Nehwal, a two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist, and the future men’s doubles team of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila will compete.
