PV Sindhu won the elusive singles gold medal at the CWG 2022

PV Sindhu of India won her first multi-sport gold medal when she defeated Michelle Li of Canada in the 2022 Commonwealth Games women’s singles badminton final 21-15, 21-13. Sindhu, a two-time Olympic winner and previous world champion, won a silver medal in singles at the most recent Commonwealth Games, as well as a silver medal at the Asian Games in 2018.

In 2016, she won silver in Rio de Janeiro and bronze the following year in Tokyo.

Sindhu won gold in the mixed team event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She also won a bronze medal in women’s singles at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

In the final, Sindhu, India’s most decorated singles player, handily overcame her Canadian opponent.

Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min, on the other hand, made her sweat in the semi-finals.

Sindhu previously took silver in the mixed team event.

In the opening game, Michelle sought to earn points by playing close to the net, whilst Sindhu was more aggressive.

After a smash on Li’s left, the Canadian made it 7-6 with a drop shot on Sindhu’s right.

Sindhu grabbed three points in a row after the break to extend her lead to 14-8. Michelle was then annoyed as she netted a simple forehand drop.

Michelle did hit two consecutive backhand winners for 14-17, but Sindhu took the first game with a swat shot on the Canadian’s body.

The Hyderabadi took a 4-2 lead in the second quarter with a fantastic retrieve off her body and led 11-6 at the half.

Michelle battled back to win the longest rally of the set with a forehand winner. Sindhu, on the other hand, shut the door on her and completed a fantastic victory with a crosscourt winner.

“I had spent a long time seeking this gold, and now I had it. I’m ecstatic. The audience contributed to today’s success “Sindhu noted after the final.
