PV Sindhu and Manpreto Sindhu lead Indian delegation at CWG opening ceremony

PV Sindhu and Manpreet Singh, captain of the Indian men’s hockey team, lead the Indian team in the opening ceremony of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The Indian delegation was led by Olympic medalist PV Sindhu and men’s hockey captain Manpreet Singh as they opened the 2022 Commonwealth Games  on Thursday at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium. Neeraj Chopra was  India’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony, and he was injured while competing for a silver medal at the World Championships in Athletics. He was dropped from CWG 2022 due to his injury.

Along with Olympic medalist P.V Sindhu, the group includes Mirabai Chanu, Ravi Kumar Dahiya, Lovlina Borgohain and Bajrang Punia. Vinesh Phogat and Manika Batra, as well as Hima Das, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, and Amit Panghal, are the defending CWG champions.

Along with Olympic medalist P.V Sindhu, the team included Mirabai Chanu, Ravi Kumar Dahiya, Lovlina Borgohain and Bajrang Punia. Vinesh Phogat and Manika Batra, along with Hima Das, Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Amit Panghal, are the defending CWG champions.  India will have representatives from 215 competitors, who will participate in 141 events in 19 sports.

The top eight teams will compete for the women’s T20I cricket gold medal  at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. On Friday, India’s women’s cricket team will make their CWG debut against Australia.

The women’s hockey team will face Ghana.  More than 5,000 athletes will take part in the Commonwealth Games, which kick off in the British city of Birmingham on Friday, despite the absence of many athletic superstars.

There will be 1,875 medals in all sports categories, the first time there are more women’s events than men’s  in a global multi-sport event.  The Commonwealth Games featured 136 gold medals for female athletes and 134 gold medals for male competitors.  India won 66 medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

India’s best performance at the Commonwealth Games was in 2010. India won 101 medals at the 2010 CWG, including 38 gold.
