India’s wrestler Sakshi Malik earns a hat-trick of CWG medals

Sakshi Malik came back from being down 4-0 at one point to win the women’s 62kg freestyle wrestling gold medal at Birmingham 2022.

Sakshi Malik, an Indian wrestler, won the women’s 62kg freestyle wrestling event at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Friday in Birmingham, UK.
Sakshi Malik won her third medal in a row at the CWG. She got silver in the 58kg event in Glasgow in 2014 and bronze in Gold Coast in 2018.
Sakshi Malik, who won a bronze medal at Rio 2016, beat Ana Godinez Gonzalez of Canada by fall in the gold medal match at the Coventry Stadium and Arena. This gave her the top spot on the podium.
“Feeling very very very happy, very excited, and very happy,” was how Sakshi Malik summed up how she was feeling.
Ana Gonzalez, the current Pan-American champion and a former junior world gold medalist, started the match strongly and scored first blood with a two-point takedown after Sakshi Malik mistimed her counter-attack. Just before the break, the Canadian took down her opponent with one leg. This gave her a two-point lead.
With everything on the line in the last three minutes, the Indian, who was behind 4–0, came out fighting in the second period and won the fight in one move.
The Indian wrestler started her match with a single-legged takedown that put her opponent on the mat and gave her control. Then, Sakshi Malik turned it into an armbar and pinned Gonzalez to win right away.
Sakshi Malik said about her comeback from being down 4-0, “I always think I’m the best, and I’m sure I’ll win.” “That’s why I went for an attack after three minutes, and it worked.”
Earlier, Sakshi Malik beat Kelsey Barnes of England quickly in the quarter-finals by having better technique. This put her in a match against Berthe Etane Ngolle of Cameroon in the semi-finals.
The former African champion was thought to be a tougher opponent for the Rio medalist, but Sakshi Malik beat her easily in a match that lasted just over a minute, again by having better technique.
The two bronze medals went to Nigerians Esther Kolawole and Berthe Etane Ngolle.
