India’s application for the 2036 Olympics has been welcomed by Russia

The Olympic Games in India will have “specialists” from Russia, according to Oleg Matytsin, the country’s minister of sports.

Russia has agreed to assist India in hosting the 2036 Olympics if the bid is approved by the International Olympic Committee, despite the country’s continued exclusion from international sport as a result of the invasion of Ukraine (IOC).

Oleg Matytsin, the minister of sports for Russia, stated that “specialists” in his nation “would be pleased to help in organising the Olympic Games in India.”

India has consistently shown interest in hosting the 2036 Games with Ahmedabad as the main city, although no real formal action has been taken.

The president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Narinder Batra, put out a novel multi-city candidacy last year, with Ahmedabad serving as the focal point. The Gujarat High Court was informed two months ago by Gujarat’s Advocate General Kamal Trivedi that “we are preparing for the Olympics of 2036” and that “the Olympic Committee would visit in 2025.”

Matytsin stated to RIA Sport on Wednesday that Russia was “extremely thrilled” that India hoped to host the Games when he was in India.

If a goal like hosting the Olympics becomes a reality, this will be another indicator of the nation’s steady improvement. If a choice is reached, Russian experts will be pleased to assist in organising the Olympic Games in India. “We are always open to dialogue and willing to offer our expertise in hosting the Olympic Games, and we have done this many times,” Matytsin was cited as saying.

According to Russian state media, Matytsin reportedly suggested a friendly football match between India, rated 104th in the world, and 35th-ranked Russia if India indicated interest.

Russia’s offer at this early stage is primarily symbolic. However, it shows that it is ready to strengthen bilateral ties, especially as India becomes one of Russia’s biggest oil buyers as a result of the sanctions.

The minister spoke with Anurag Thakur, the minister of sports, on Wednesday while leading a Russian team to the New Delhi International Convention Against Doping in Sport. Denis Alipov, the Russian ambassador, was also present at the meeting.

According to sports ministry sources, one of the areas of sports collaboration that the ministers reportedly discussed was the exchange of technical information between players and coaches.

The IOC commission, which will choose the host city for the 2036 Games between 2025 and 2029, is led by the former president of Croatia, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic.

Russia, by the way, was one of the countries that expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics. The nation has been ignored by international athletic organisations since its invasion of Ukraine.

According to Matytsin, 186 international athletic events, including 36 major international sporting events, were scheduled to take place in Russia in 2022–2023 but have since been cancelled or postponed by international sports organisations.

Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying in May that he was in discussions with the IOC to bring the Olympics back to the British city in 2036 or 2040. Apart from a potential joint offer from Berlin and Tel Aviv, other cities in the running include Istanbul, Doha, Jakarta, and Cairo.

India attempted to host the Olympics twice, in 2024 and 2032, but was unable to put together a candidacy. The next opportunity won’t occur until 2036 because the following three Olympic hosts have already been selected: Paris in 2024, Los Angeles in 2028, and Brisbane in 2032.

Ahmedabad has already begun making infrastructural investments. The facility is ready to host the Olympics, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated in February at the opening of the Narendra Modi stadium.
