India shaped history. Murali Shreeshankar earned the first silver medal in long jump event at the CWG 2022

Murali Sreeshankar’s CWG medal was earned by a one-centimetre foul, a spectacular comeback, and a silver medal.

Murali Sreeshankar won silver in the men’s long jump with a best leap of 8.08m at the current Commonwealth Games 2022. He accomplished the feat with his fifth jump after spending the majority of the final out of the medal positions. Laquan Nairn of the Bahamas won the gold medal. Nairn also had the greatest leap of 8.08m, but his second best of 7.98m was higher than Sreeshankar’s 7.84m.

President Droupadi Murmu congratulated Murali Sreeshankar on his silver medal in long jump at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Friday, saying his historic feat will inspire many Indians, particularly the young.

“Congratulations to Sreeshankar for winning silver in the long jump at #CommonweathGames. Your long leap has brought India’s first-ever medal for this event in Commonwealth Games. This pathbreaking achievement will inspire countless Indians, especially the youth,” Murmu tweeted.

If two jumpers are tied on the same distance, the one with the better second best attempt will be ranked first.

South African Jovan van Vuuren (8.06m) won bronze.

Muhammed Anees Yahiya, the only Indian in the competition, finished sixth with a best leap of 7.97m.

Sreeshankar’s silver medal was the best among Indian men long jumpers at the Commonwealth Games. Suresh Babu received a bronze medal in the 1978 competition.

Prajusha Maliakkal won silver in the 2010 competition in Delhi, while the renowned Anju Bobby George took bronze in 2002.

Tejaswin Shankar earned bronze in the men’s high jump on Wednesday, giving India its first medal in athletics at this CWG.
