Former Indian Cricketer Vinod Kambli Opens Up About Struggling Financially

“I’m a retired cricketer, who is completely dependent on the pension from the BCCI. My only payment (source of income) at the moment is from the Board, for which I am really thankful and grateful. It takes care of my family.”

Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli recently opened up about struggling financially. The former batter is quite a well-known figure in the cricketing circuit. Kambli has always been a part of cricket through coaching stints even after his retirement. However, as explained by him now, the flamboyant cricketer is now looking for extended work opportunities as his financial condition deteriorates.

Kambli, moreover, expressed that the pension coming through the BCCI now serves as his sole income. The pension, apparently, amounts to INR 30,000 after the latest revision by the board. However, he explained how that sort of income is proving to be insufficient as he has a family to take care of.

Vinod Kambli Explains His Financial Tribulations

The 50-year-old player explained his tribulations as he stated how his last work as a mentor at Tendulkar Middlesex Global Academy was hectic.

“I used to wake up at 5 am and take a cab to DY Patil Stadium. It was very hectic. I would then coach at the BKC ground in the evening,” Kambli said. ” I’m a retired cricketer, who is completely dependent on the pension from the BCCI. My only payment (source of income) at the moment is from the Board, for which I am really thankful and grateful. It takes care of my family.”

Kambli has always been a part of the Mumbai Cricket circuit in some or other capacity. And he explained how he turned to MCA to seek help regarding this situation. “I was seeking help from the MCA (Mumbai Cricket Association). Came into the CIC [Cricket Improvement Committee], but it was an honorary job. I went to the MCA for some help. I have a family to look after and told the MCA many times that if you require me, I am there whether it is at the Wankhede Stadium or at BKC. Mumbai cricket has given me a lot. I owe my life to this game. After retirement, there is no cricket for you. But if you want to stay steady in life, it is important to have assignments. I’m looking for that from the MCA. All I can do is request the MCA president [Dr. Vijay Patil] or the secretary [Sanjay Naik] for an assignment.”

Moreover, Kambli, who’s also known for his close ties with cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar explained his involvement with this trial. “He (Sachin) knows everything, but I am not expecting anything from him. He gave me the TMGA (Tendulkar Middlesex Global Academy) assignment. I was very happy. He has been a very good friend. He has always been there for me.”

Adding on, Vinod Kambli also counted his willingness to join the Mumbai team in any capacity. “I need assignments, where I can work with youngsters. I know Mumbai has retained Amol (Muzumdar) as their head coach, but if anywhere I am needed, I am there. We have played together and we were a great team. That’s what I want them (Mumbai team) to do…to play as a team.”

Vinod Kambli proved to be a prodigy for the Indian team as a player. A young Kambli went on to score 793 runs just within 7 test matches. The left-handed batsman averaged an impressive 113.29 in tests with a couple of double centuries to his name in a single year. However, the tables have now turned drastically as the former batter now looks for inclusion in the Indian and Mumbai cricket scenario in any way possible.
