They hit me in the crotch, locked me up in the loo of a jail: Arnab Goswami on his arrest

Arnab Goswami has spoken about the abuse and terrible treatment he endured after his arrest in November 2020. Editor-in-Chief of Republic TV in an interview with ANI told that he was physically assaulted and thrashed during his arrest in the TRP scam. The Mumbai police had arrested the editor-in-chief of Republic Media Network on November 4, 2020.

Republic TV’s Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, while speaking about his arrest in November 2020, said, “They were pushing me with the butt of their weapons, hitting me in the crotch, thrashing me and not even letting me wear my shoes.” “[They locked] me up in the loo of a jail, [did] things which are unbelievable,” he added.

WHAT WERE THE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST ARNAB GOSWAMI?

  • WhatsApp chats in connection with TRP manipulation have come to the fore. These chats were allegedly between BARC CEO Partho Dasgupta and Arnab Goswami.
  • Three techniques would allegedly be employed in a bid to manipulate TRPs:
  1. The residents of the sample houses in which barometers were placed to monitor TRP ratings, were paid bribes, so that they would keep the channels which needed a spike in ratings running.
  2. Dual LCN was used to increase viewership. With this technique, the same channel can help increasing the rating by showing one or more frequencies.
  3. Alleged manipulation of television channel ratings obtained in the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC). In this connection, the police had earlier arrested Dasgupta, former CEO of BARC, accusing him of manipulating TRPs to help the channel.
