Shocking! List of Major Bridge Collapses in India that Killed Thousands Mercilessly
These five bridge tragedies rank among the deadliest bridge collapses recorded in the Indian history.

The recent Morbi bridge collapse has shook India. Gujarat authorities estimate that 200 people were on the bridge across the Machchhu River in the town of Morbi when it fell on October 30 at about 6:30 p.m. local time. Even though bridges are among the greatest technical achievements in history, they have occasionally and tragically broken owing to structural flaws, bad weather, or too much weight.
These five bridge tragedies rank among the deadliest bridge collapses recorded in the Indian history.
1. Arunachal Pradesh footbridge collapse (2011)
Around 5 o’clock in the evening, the bridge spanning the river that connected Seppa Market and new Seppa municipality collapsed, causing everyone standing on it to fall into the water and drown. The disaster is thought to have killed over 30 people. The majority of the children who lost their lives in the deadly bridge collapse were between the ages of 10 and 15.
2. Majerhat flyover collapse in Kolkata (2018)
Around 4.45 pm, during rush hour, a 40-year-old bridge that crossed rail tracks in the congested Alipore neighbourhood collapsed. It crosses the Majerhat Railway Station and links Behala and other southern suburbs to the city centre. Firefighters somehow managed to rescue at least 20 to 25 injured people, but many more were suspected to be buried beneath the rubble.
3. Vivekananda flyover collapse in Kolkata (2016)
A 2.2 km-long Vivekananda flyover that was still under construction collapsed in a busy market area in North Kolkata, killing up to 26 people and injuring more than 60. The flyover’s construction company, IVRCL, based in Hyderabad, referred to the collapse as a “act of God” in an effort to depict it as a natural disaster.
4. Darjeeling bridge collapse (2011)
On October 22, 2011, as the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) was holding a gathering at Bijanbari in the Darjeeling district, a crumbling ancient wooden footbridge over a spring caused 32 fatalities and over 60 injuries. When a sizable crowd gathered on the bridge for the gathering due to the September 18 earthquake, the bridge collapsed.
5. Mumbai footover bridge collapse (2019)
On March 14, 2019, a footbridge in Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station collapsed, killing six people and injuring over 30 others. Just six months before to the tragedy, the busy CSMT bridge connecting it to the Azad Maidan police station underwent an examination. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation looks after it (BMC). According to the study that was cited, based on a sample size of 2,010 bridges, the natural catastrophes in India have had the most catastrophic impact on the breakdown of the bridge infrastructure, amounting to “80.3%”.
