The Ministry of Home Affairs appointed senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sanjay Arora as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police on Sunday (July 31). Arora, a 1988-batch Tamil Nadu cadre IPS officer who was previously the Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, will take over for Rakesh Asthana on Monday.
“A farewell parade to Sh Rakesh Asthana, Commissioner of Police, Delhi, is being organised at Parade Ground, new Police Lines, Delhi at 4.00 p.m. on July 31,” an official order to all senior police officials read.

Sanjay Arora is a Tamil Nadu cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 1988 batch. He graduated from Jaipur’s Malviya National Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
Arora has worked in Tamil Nadu Police in a variety of capacities since joining the IPS. He was the Superintendent of Police (SP) for the Special Task Force, where he had significant success against the Veerappan gang, for which he received the CM’s Gallantry Medal for Bravery and Heroic Action.
Sanjay Arora was also instrumental in establishing the Special Security Group (SSG) to protect the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu during the height of LTTE activity.
IPS Sanjay Arora appointed as the DG of the ITBP last year
IPS Sanjay Arora became the 31st Chief of the ITBP on August 31, 2021. From 1997 to 2002, he was on deputation with the border patrol organisation as Commandant.
From 1997 to 2000, Arora led an ITBP border guarding battalion in Matli, Uttarakhand. He made significant contributions to training as an instructor, serving as Commandant (Combat Wing) at the ITBP Academy in Mussoorie from 2000 to 2002.
Sanjay Arora has also served as Coimbatore Police Commissioner
Sanjay Arora was also the Commissioner of Police in Coimbatore from 2002 to 2004. He was also the Villupuram range’s Deputy Inspector General of Police and the Deputy Director of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption.
He has served as Additional Commissioner – Crime & Headquarters and Additional Commissioner – Traffic for the Chennai City Police. He was promoted to ADGP (Operations) and ADGP (Administration) in Tamil Nadu Police.

Sanjay Arora, the new commissioner of Delhi Police, has previously served the positions of IG (Special Operations) BSF, IG Chhattisgarh Sector CRPF, and IG Operations CRPF. Before being appointed as DG, ITBP, he served as ADG HQ & Ops CRPF and Spl DG J&K Zone CRPF.
Among other honours, he received the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2004, the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2014, the Police Special Duty Medal, the Antrik Suraksha Padak, and the UN Peacekeeping Medal.
