Indian Naval ships Nishank & Akshay to be decommissioned today

Two naval warships, INS Nishank and INS Akshay, will be decommissioned on Friday evening in the naval dockyard of Mumbai.

They will be decommissioned after 32 years of being at the forefront of safeguarding the maritime interests of the nation. Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral R Hari Kumar, will be the chief guest at the event.

Akshay, which was primarily involved in anti-submarine warfare and coastal patrol, was equipped with long-range torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets.The pennants of the ships were removed on Sunday evening signifying the end of their service. Veterans, who served on these ships, will attend the decommissioning event along with their families.

Nishank, the fourth of the Veer Class Missile Corvette, was an integral part of the Killer Squadron, renowned for its heroics in the 1971 War. The naval ship has also operated on both the eastern as well as the western seaboard.The ship has currently been earmarked to be displayed as a war relic at a suitable historic location.
