Govt employees leaving Kashmir after rise in killings

The transit camps of migrant Kashmiri Pandits looked deserted on Friday as hundreds of fear-stricken employees escaped to Jammu in the dead of night on Thursday amidst a fresh spate of targeted civilian killings in Kashmir.

The Pandits accused the government of forcing employees to migrate en masse.

More than 80 per cent of employees at the Sheikpora transit camp left for Jammu, said Ashwini Pandita, an engineer at the Roads and Buildings department.

“Only those stayed back who had to sort out the issues of their school children. We are in touch with the school administrations to get approval for online classes or migration to Jammu schools,” Pandita said.

He said the government was happy with the migration of Kashmiri Pandits because they had no solution to their insecurities or for their relocation outside Kashmir.

“According to police officers, it will take two to three years to bring normalcy in Kashmir and it seemed that the government was happy about our migration as it failed to provide us security,” he said.
