‘Decisions made by his guards,’ says Ghulab Nabi Azad in resignation letter | Top points

Ghulam Nabi Azad resigns: Ghulam Nabi Azad resigned after criticising Rahul Gandhi’s ‘immature’ decision-making abilities.

Ghulam Nabi Azad steps down: Ghulam Nabi Azad, a veteran Congress leader, resigned from the party on Friday (August 26), ending his nearly 50-year association with the organisation. Azad slammed Rahul Gandhi, who is currently out of the country with Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, in his five-page resignation letter.

Ghulam Nabi Azad chastised Rahul Gandhi for making ‘immature’ decisions.

Azad, a member of the G-23 group seeking party reform, claims that Congress has lost both the will and the ability to fight for what is right for India under the tutelage of the AICC coterie.

The veteran leader stated in his letter that the leadership should have undertaken a ‘Congress Jodo yatra’ before embarking on a ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra.’

The following are the key points from Ghulam Nabi Azad’s resignation letter:

  1. Rahul Gandhi’s tearing up of a government ordinance in full view of the media was one of the most egregious examples of this immaturity. This ‘childish’ behaviour completely undermined the Prime Ministers and the Government of India’s authority. This single action, more than any other, contributed significantly to the UPA Government’s defeat in 2014.
  2. Since the 2019 elections, the party’s situation has only gotten worse. You (Sonia Gandhi) took over as interim President after Rahul Gandhi stepped down in a “huff” and insulted all the senior party functionaries who have given their lives to the party in a meeting of the extended Working Committee. A position that you have held for the past three years and continue to hold.
  3. The remote control model that destroyed the UPA government’s institutional integrity was now applied to the Indian National Congress. While you (Sonia Gandhi) are only a symbolic figurehead, all important decisions are made by Rahul Gandhi or, worse, his security guards and PAs.
  4. Unfortunately, the situation in the Congress party has reached a point of no return, and ‘proxies’ are now being propped up to take over the party’s leadership. This experiment is doomed to fail because the party has been so thoroughly destroyed that the situation is irreversible. Furthermore, the selected one’ would be nothing more than a puppet on a string.
  5. The entire election process for the organisation is a farce and a sham. Handpicked AICC lieutenants have been forced to sign on lists prepared by the coterie that runs the AICC headquarters at 24 Akbar Road.
