Taali First Look: Sushmita Sen Will Play The Role Of Transgender Activist Shreegauri Sawant

The film is directed by Ravi Jadhav and will be premiered on Voot Select.

Social media is buzzing with the first look of Taali, an upcoming project in which Sushmita Sen will be seen playing a transgender. Sen will play the part of Shreegauri Sawant, a transgender activist in this project which is set to be released as a web series.

Sen took to Instagram to share the first look of her character as Shreegauri Sawant who is fondly called as Gauri Sawant.

While more about this web series is awaited, here’s a little about Gauri Sawant. Born as Ganesh in Pune, Gauri lost her mother when she was 7 years old. She ran away from her home to not disappoint her father who was a police officer.

Gauri came to limelight when fought for the adoption rights of transgender people. In 2008, she adopted Gayatri.

“Nothing makes me prouder & more grateful than to have the privilege of portraying this beautiful person & of bringing her story to the world!!,” Sushmita Sen captions her Instagram picture in an ode to Gauri Sawant.

Sushmita Sen has always broken the barriers of the society which unnecessarily hinder the choice and scope of a human being. From being a mother from a young age to always vocalising on feminism and equality, Sen is a role model for youngsters mostly.
The 46 year old former Miss Universe adopted Renee Sen when she was 23 years old, beating the social diction of a girl marrying and carrying the genes of her husband.

With this role, Sen will pave the way for all the current generation actors and those aspiring to be one, to take up challenges and not shy away from doing something just because nobody else has done it before.

Currently, transgender roles are mostly played by male actors. Be it Ashutosh Rana in Sangharsh, Mahesh Manjrekar in Rajjo, Prakash Raj in Appu, Raghava Lawrence in Kanchana, male stars have given a stupendous performance as transgenders and have nailed the character, but still lack of participation of female actors has build a gap that needs to be addressed.
It is essential to address this gap in order to bring in inclusivity, and acceptance towards the LGBTQ+ community. Years before Rubina Dilaik, had played the role of a transgender Soumya Harman Singh in Shakti – Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki. Rubina was hailed for portraying the role and has received several awards for it.
