Mandakini Reveals the Dark Side of 1980s Bollywood, Saying “If the actors did not like any girl, then they would ask to replace the actress.”

Mandakini is one of the most versatile and celebrated actresses of Bollywood since the 1980s. Veteran actor Mandakini made her acting debut with the movie, ‘Mera Saathi’. The actress received massive recognition and fame after the release of her second movie, ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’. She starred opposite Rajiv Kapoor, directed by Raj Kapoor.

After the release of Ram Teri Ganga Maili, the actress rose to fame overnight and tasted success like none other. After delivering several blockbuster movies and playing various iconic roles, Mandakini took a break from acting after her marriage in the early 1990s. The iconic actress recently made a comeback with her first single, Maa O Maa. It is also a debut single for her son, Rabbil Thakur.

In one of her recent interviews with a media agency, Mandakini spoke about the male dominance and dark side of Bollywood during her era, in the 1980s. She mentioned how, a few decades back, the male actors in the Bollywood industry used to decide the fate of so many actresses. The male actors were often given the privilege to decide with whom they wanted to work. If they did not like any girl, they would ask the director and producer of the movie to replace the actress.

When asked if she had ever witnessed such an appalling thing happening to her personally, the veteran actress smiled and responded “ah! So many times. Say someone narrates a movie and I accept. Just within 2-3 days, they would announce the movie with someone else.”

The 59-year-old actress also spoke about the ignorant attitude of the directors in the Bollywood industry. She clearly mentioned how the directors back in the 1980s would not care much about the actresses.

She added “The heroines back in the 1980s were just ripped to 2-3 songs in a movie and the director generally kept his option open, to replace the actress at any given point during the shoot of the movie.”

When asked about her new upcoming project, Ma O Ma, the actress said “I was wondering to get back to work since a long time since my children are old enough to handle themselves now. I recently met Sajan.. We have known each other since we came to Bombay. Ma O Ma is a song with really sweet lyrics and talks about a mother’s sentiments.”

The actress added “When you’re resuming work after decades, it’s always better to start with a smaller project.” We’re hoping to see the iconic actress making a comeback on the big screen.
