While remaining “deeply disturbed” by the situation in Ukraine, India Friday joined China, Brazil and Gabon in abstaining from voting on a UNSC resolution which condemned “illegal” referendums held by Russia to annex 4 regions of Ukraine and called upon Moscow to unconditionally withdraw troops from the country.
Barring a couple of procedural votes, which saw India going against Moscow to allow Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to address the UN virtually, India’s “consistent” position on Ukraine has seen it abstaining from voting on all UN resolutions condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine, as also other Ukraine-related issues. India has in all abstained over a dozen times in what many see as a tilt towards Moscow, but it has also maintained, and reminded Russia, all along that the global order is based on the UN Charter, international law and respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.
