K-pop isn’t always kind to its rising stars. Many K-pop stars have tragically died before their time, from freak accidents to heartbreaking, self-inflicted deaths, with a string of suicides in 2019 drawing international attention to the well-being of the genre’s biggest names. While since then the industry have started taking great care by going on hiatus. One thing is certain: there have been enough K-pop deaths for the industry to take notice. Here are some of the most tragic losses of young K-pop talents.
Lee Hye-ryeon a.k.a. U;Nee
South Korean singer and actress Lee Hye-ryeon, also known as U;Nee, died tragically in late January 2007 after being found hanged in her Seo-gu, Incheon apartment. She was 26 years old. Her death was ruled to be an apparent suicide.
However, the K-pop star allegedly managed to conceal her stress to the point where even her family was unaware of her predicament.
Kim Ha Neul a.k.a. Rottyful Sky
Kim Ha Neul, a K-pop star, died at the age of 25, but she was already a veteran of the industry. Debuted at 14 and when she was in her mid-twenties, she decided to reinvent herself and began going by Rottyful Sky, a name that fans of the popular K-drama “Scent of a Woman” will no doubt recognize.
The singer-songwriter died in 2013 at the Catholic University of Korea Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, with initial reports blaming a brain tumor.
Kim Jong-hyun from SHINee
K-pop fans all over the world mourned the death of Kim Jong-hyun, the lead singer of SHINee. The 27-year-old star, also known as Jonghyun, was discovered dead in his Seoul apartment on December 18, 2017, in an apparent suicide, in a case that drew international attention.
Sulli from f(x)
Sulli, a South Korean actress and singer best known as a member of the K-pop group f(x), was discovered dead in her home on October 14, 2019. She was 25 years old. The star, born Choi Jin-ri, died of an apparent suicide, according to police, who noted that her manager went to her home after he was unable to reach her.
