Anjali Bansal founded Avaana Capital, which invests in technology and innovation-led start-ups that are accelerating climate action and conservation while delivering exponential yields. She has invested in various of successful startups, such as Nykaa, Delhivery, UrbanClap, Darwinbox, Coverstack, Farmart, and Lenskart. She was earlier the non-executive chairperson of Dena Bank, having been appointed by the Government of India to drive the resolution of the stressed bank, which resulted in the first ever three-way merger of three large public sector banks-Dena, Bank of Baroda, and Vijaya Bank.
Anjali Bansal was earlier a global partner and managing director with TPG Growth PE, the Founder and CEO of Spencer Stuart India, and a strategy consultant with McKinsey & Co. in New York and India. She began her professional career as an engineer.
Anjali continues to serve on numerous boards, including Piramal Enterprises and Tata Power, as an independent non-executive director. She earlier headed the Women’s World Banking India board, served on the Advisory Board of the Columbia University Global Centers, and served on the boards of GSK Pharma, Siemens, and Delhivery. She is a member of the Advisory Council of Open Networks for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and has been appointed to the Experts Advisory Committee of the Honorable Prime Minister’s Startup India Seed Fund Scheme. She is very involved with NITI Aayog and the Women Entrepreneurship Platform.
Early life and Education of Anjali Bansal
She received her bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from Gujarat University. After a short brief spell at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Anjali earned a post-graduate degree in International Affairs with distinction from Columbia University, where she majored in International Finance and Business.
Personal Life of Anjali Bansal
Anjali found her husband, Sandeep Singhal, in New York while working for McKinsey & Company. Sandeep is now a shareholder in the venture capital firm Nexus Venture Partners. The couple currently resides in Mumbai.
Awards and Recognition
Anjali was named one of India’s most powerful businesswomen by Business Today in 2013, Fortune India Magazine in 2012 and India Today in 2011.
She is the President of the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a member of the CII National Committee on Corporate Governance. Anjali previously co-founded and chaired the FICCI Center for Corporate Governance programme for Women on Corporate Boards as an active participant in the dialogue on corporate governance and diversity. She is a founder of TIE as well as a member of the Young Presidents Organization.
