Cyrus Mistry was an Indian businessman who worked as a chairperson of the Tata Group between 2012-2016. He was the 6th chairperson of the Tata Group. Cyrus Mistry’s rise to success, from an outsider to being the chairperson of Tata Group for a brief period of time, has been an incredible one.
At the time of his unfortunate death, Cyrus Mistry was one of the richest men in India. Mistry, at the time of his death, had a net worth of nearly $29 billion. The Indian businessman owned an 18.4% stake in Tata Sons, through his company, Cyrus Investments Pvt. Ltd.
Early and Personal Life of Cyrus Mistry:
Cyrus Mistry was born into a Parsi business family residing in Mumbai, Maharashtra on 4th July 1968. His family was in business for over a century. He was the son of Indian billionaire and construction magnate Pallonji Mistry. Both his parents followed the Zoroastrian faith.
His mother, Patsy Perin Dubash, was born in Ireland and his father, Pallonji Mistry, went ahead and got Irish citizenship. Cyrus Mistry had a brother, Shapoor Mistry, and two sisters, Laila and Aloo.
The Advent of Cyrus Mistry’s Business League:
Cyrus joined the family business, Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. Ltd as a managing director in 1991.
In 2013, The Economist categorized Cyrus Mistry as “the most important industrialist in both India & Britain.” Cyrus ‘s net worth touched a whopping $10 billion in the year 2018.
In 2006, Cyrus Mistry joined the Board of Tata Sons. He served as a Director of Tata Elxsi Limited during 1990-2009.
In 2012, Cyrus Mistry was appointed as the Chairperson of the Tata Group. That was not just it. The reigning businessman was also made the chairperson of all the Tata companies, including Tata Industries, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Power, Tata Teleservices, Indian Hotels, Tata Global Beverages and Tata Chemicals.
It was in October 2016, that Cyrus was voted out of the chairmanship of Tata Group by the Tata Sons board.
The Tragic Death of the Reigning Businessman:
Cyrus Mistry died an unfortunate death on September 4, 2022, in a car accident. On September 4, Cyrus and three other members of the Pandole family visited Iranshah Atash Behram Udvada to offer prayers after the death of Dinshaw Pandole and Pallonji Mistry.
While they were returning, their Mercedes-Benz HLC met with an unfortunate accident. The car rammed hard against the divider on the bridge at the Surya River near Charoti in Palghar district.
Driver Dr. Anahita Pandole and her husband, who wore seat belts, survived but with injuries. Cyrus Mistry and Jehangir Pandole, who were sitting in the rear seats without any seat belts, died on the spot.
