Softbank’s overseas business chief resigns after only six months on the job
SoftBank Group Corp of Japan announced on Wednesday the appointment of Alex Clavel as CEO of its SoftBank Group International (SBGI) unit, succeeding Michel Combes, who leaves after only six months in the job, Trend reported with reference to Reuters.
With its large bets on late-stage startups, SoftBank revolutionised the IT sector, but as its portfolio has fallen off, the conglomerate has lost a large portion of its leadership team and been forced to drastically cut back on its investment activity through its Vision Fund.
Clavel assumes responsibility for a mishmash of resources, including chip originator Arm, which SoftBank desires to rundown, and stakes in satellite organisation OneWeb, telco T-Mobile US Inc., and advanced mechanics firm Boston Dynamics.
The leader, who burned through 19 years at Morgan Stanley prior to joining SoftBank in 2015, partook in the rebuilding of office space-sharing firm WeWork and the mix of Latin American assets into the Vision Fund following the flight of Chief Operating Officer Marcelo Claure.
The new leaves highlight the predominance by Chief Executive Masayoshi Son of the Japanese combination and its load up during a period of key float. Child will address investors on Friday.
Child “needs individuals to give him shields, offer him guidance, and make him considerably more fruitful,” cordial SoftBank board member Lip-Bu Tan wrote in an explanation recently, adding that “unfortunate decisions made excessively fast can have unfortunate results for the organization.”
