India confirms eighth case of monkeypox after another Nigerian tests positive in Delhi

Kerala has had the most infections so far, with five cases. This is Delhi’s third case; the previous two were recently recorded.

On Tuesday, Delhi reported a new case of monkeypox virus. A Nigerian living in Delhi was found to be infected with the virus. The national capital now has three cases of the viral disease.

“Another Nigerian man living in Delhi tests positive for monkeypox,” ANI reported, citing official sources.

With this, India has reported eight cases of monkeypox.

The city of Delhi reported its first monkeypox case last month, when a 34-year-old man from west Delhi tested positive. Fourteen of his contacts were quarantined, including the doctor who first treated him, but none of them displayed any symptoms.

On Monday night, the patient was released from the LNJP Hospital.

Meanwhile, the condition of the second monkeypox patient in Delhi, a Nigerian national, is said to be stable.

“He has fever, skin eruptions and blisters and is being monitored by doctors at the Delhi government-run LNJP Hospital,” officials said.

LNJP Hospital is the national capital’s nodal hospital for monkeypox treatment.

The test results of the remaining two suspected patients are awaited, according to officials quoted by PTI.

Kerala reported the remaining five monkeypox cases. The state also reported the first death in the country as a result of the monkeypox virus.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George announced today that a 30-year-old UAE returnee tested positive for monkeypox virus and is being treated in Malappuram.

“He arrived at Kozhikode airport from the UAE on July 27,” George explained.

A 22-year-old man who had recently returned from the UAE died in Kerala, and his samples tested positive for the monkeypox virus.

In the midst of an increase in monkeypox cases in the country, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said Tuesday that citizens should not panic and that an awareness campaign is being carried out in collaboration with state governments to prevent the spread of the infection.

“There is no need to be afraid of monkeypox because a public awareness campaign is being run in collaboration with state governments: public awareness is critical in the context of monkeypox. On behalf of the Government of India, we have also formed a task force led by a member of NITI Aayog “Mandaviya explained.
